Compensation reduction

Due to the declines in state funding, the El Segundo School Board approved a resolution for the El Segundo Unified School District to reserve the right to reduce 2009-10 compensation for employees represented by the El Segundo Teachers Association and California School Employees Association. The resolution states that if it is necessary, the ESUSD will have the right to negotiate a reduced compensation for employees represented by the El Segundo Teachers Association and the California School Employees Association effective July 1, 2009, or a date after that as established through the negotiation process. The School Board also will have the right to reduce annual compensation for unrepresented employees effective July 1. ESUSD Superintendent Geoff Yantz will provide written notice to the El Segundo Teachers Association and the California School Employees Association about the contents of the resolution as well as notify individual employees regarding the possibility that their annual compensation may be reduced effective July 1, or at a later date.

Extended lease

In an effort to generate additional revenue for the School District, the El Segundo School Board approved extending the district’s lease with Kaiser Bros., the company that occupies a portion of the district’s property located at 210 Penn St.

It has been 18 months since the El Segundo School Board approved the original lease for a two-year term beginning Dec. 1, 2007 and terminating on Nov. 30, 2009. The company recently proposed to extend the current lease agreement to a five-year lease through Nov. 30, 2014. According to the district’s report, as a condition to the lease the lessee retains the right to terminate the lease extension period at any time after the 36th month of the extension period. According to the report, the lease term for the office/warehouse facility of 3,726 sq. ft. will be maintained at the rate of $3,736 per month.

Graduation ceremonies

El Segundo Middle School will have its “promotion” celebration June 18, at 2 p.m. at the school’s quad area. Later that day, at 6 p.m., El Segundo High School students will graduate on the school’s Hazeltine Field. Arena Continuation High School will have its graduation ceremony June 15 at 6 p.m. at Library Park on Main Street.

The El Segundo School Board annually recognizes El Segundo School District staff members for long-term service to the district. This year’s honorees for 10 years of service are: Julie Henneau, Liliana DeBartolo, Jody Stritzel, Brenda Gronhagen, Kirby Onaga, Rosemary Voulelikas, Alfredo Perez, Alfredo Perez, Patricia Guzman, Denise Fucci, Lubna Lodhy, Carmen Gomez, Maria Salinas, Alex Schwarz, Ada Aponte, Meredith Beachly, Beatriz Calzadilla, Mark Doering, Jessica Gray, Pam Honner-Licht, Maria O’Brien, Emily Pugatch, Jim Walter, Robin Espinoza, Rainy Smith, Gina Chada and Renee Hoover.

Gold Rush assembly

The School Board approved a fourth-grade assembly, funded by the Parent Teacher Association, depicting “Pioneer Living” during the California Gold Rush period. According to the staff report, the interactive, hands-on demonstration allows students to re-enact life during the Gold Rush, from the rigors of survival to the clothing, foods and popular activities of the day. The students also “pan for gold” to gain the true flavor of pioneer living.

Question:  This Saturday, volunteers will clean up a portion of the beach in El Segundo as part of the annual Beauty & the Beach event, which also features a family barbeque. With summer upon us and city, state and county budget cuts looming, keeping beaches clean may be more challenging than ever before.
* Can you think of low-cost ways to keep the beaches clean?

* What are your ‘pet peeves’ when it comes to trash on the beach?

* Do you think writing more tickets would be effective in getting people to clean up after themselves?
